Cultural Diversity

What is our own definition of culture? When somebody ask you about your culture what comes first into mind. I think of the food in my country, the unique traditional clothing we wear and traditional dances too. According to the dictionary culture is the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group. I would love to focus more on culture as being the attitudes and behavior characteristic of a particular social group. It can be a continent, a nation, a community or even a family. In all those there can be different cultures practiced. My family culture was different from the culture of the family next door, same thing with communities and we can go on and on. One may ask, why are we talking about culture, why does any of this have to do with anything or better yet my life. Well, the truth is, culture matters the most in our lives. It plays a pivotal role in shaping and influencing our lives. Culture greatly influences wha...

Family Theories and Rules

A theory an attempt to explain a phenomenon/ observation. They help us to predict future proceedings. There are four family theories I would like to talk about, and those theories are not only applicable in a family but also in the relationships we are in. Whether it be a friendship, or you could be dating or business you name it, all these theories apply in these relationships. 1. Exchange theory – When we are interacting with people there is this theory that if I give something to you, or do you a favor you owe me one, we expect a return on investment we put in you. It can be time, energy, or money. As human beings our feelings can get hurt, if we do not benefit anything in someone, we tend to ask themselves is it worth it? If not, we stop that relationship or do not put much focus in it. 2. Conflict theory- This theory has to do with some sort of competition/ constant conflict on resources available. Some people are more influential than others hence more likely to influen...

Marriage and Family Trends

Why did people before give birth to a lot of children than we do now? In some cultures, if the parents did not have a male child they would continue to keep trying, that way the male child can carry the family name forward. In other cultures, like my own a man could marry many wives hence could have many children from those wives. Other cultures believed that children were guests from heaven, so they wanted to always have guests. There could be numerous reasons as well why there are lower birth rates now, it could be that people now use birth control methods that were never known or used before, it could be that not a lot of people get married anymore. In some countries, government policies discourage people from making lifelong commitments making it hard to get married when you are young. Some people fear the commitment that comes with getting married and starting a family, some people are afraid of getting divorced. Marriages are being delayed to later years hence those delayed ...
